  1. Indra Nooyi ends 12-year run as PepsiCo’s CEO
  • Indra Nooyi is stepping down as chief executive officer (CEO) of food and beverage giant PepsiCo.
  • Nooyi, 62, will leave the role in October and remain chairman until early 2019.
  • Ramon Laguarta, 54, who has been a candidate to take over since a promotion last year to president, will be just the sixth CEO in the 53-year history of the company.

2. P is for Pie: Android’s latest version

  • Google launched the latest version of its Android operating system — Android Pie.
  • Android Pie mostly focuses on behind-the-scenes improvements designed to make Android phones work faster while saving precious battery life.
  • An over-the-air update to Android 9 will begin rolling out to Google’s Pixel phones.


3. Veteran Congress leader Rajinder Kumar Dhawan passes away

  • Former Congress MP, Rajinder Kumar Dhawan, passed away due to old age related ailments, at a hospital in Delhi.
  • Rajinder Kumar Dhawan was 81 years old.
  • He was the personal secretary to Indira Gandhi when she was Prime Minister of India from 1962 to 1984.
  • He was elected to Rajya Sabha in 1990. He was also a member of the Congress Working Committee.

4. Escorts Group chairman Rajan Nanda dead

  • Escorts Group chairman Rajan Nanda passed away at the age of 76, following which Nikhil Nanda has been appointed the Chairman and Managing Director.
  • Escorts Group is an Indian engineering company that operates in the sectors of agri-machinery, construction and material handling equipment, and railway equipment.

5. Kannada writer Sumatheendra Nadig no more

  • Well-known Kannada poet and critic Sumatheendra R. Nadig passed away in Bengaluru on 7th August 2018.
  • He was an important name in the modernist literary movement in Karnataka in the 60s and 70s.
  • He also headed the National Book Trust.
  • His important works include ‘Daampatya Geeta’ and ‘Panchabhoota’, collection of verses, besides critical works on Da.Ra. Bendre and Gopalakrishna Adiga.

6. President of India inaugurated ‘Festival of Democracy’ in Thiruvananthapuram

  • The President of India, Shri Ram Nath Kovind, inaugurated the ‘Festival of Democracy’ in Thiruvananthapuram to mark the conclusion of the diamond jubilee celebrations of the Kerala legislative assembly.
  • Speaking on the occasion, the President said that politics, public life and the quality of democracy are a reflection of the essential ethos of a society.
  • As such, the Kerala assembly and its debates and discussions, the humanistic values that it has historically advocated and legislated on, are a mirror to the traditions of this state.

7. Opening Ceremony of Indo – Thailand Joint Exercise Maitree 2018

  • Exercise Maitree is a joint military exercise between Indian Army and Royal Thai Army which will be conducted from 06 to 19 August 2018 in Thailand.
  • It is a platoon level exercise which comprises of infantry component.
  • The opening ceremony started with familiarization of organisation and display of weapons & equipment of both armies.

9. National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) Bill passed in Parliament

  • The constitution amendment Bill granting Constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes (NCBC) was passed by Rajya Sabha and got Parliamentary nod.
  • The Constitution (123rd Amendment) Bill 2017 was passed 156 votes to nil.
  • The Commission would not encroach upon rights of state governments as they would have their own backward class commissions.
  • It would only report and recommend the Centre.

10. GOAMILES: Goa Tourism’s app-based taxi service flagged off by CM Manohar Parrikar

  • Goa’s Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and Tourism Minister Manohar Ajgaonkar flagged off the Goa Tourism Development Corporation’s app-based taxi service called ‘GOAMILES’ in Panaji.
  • It would ensure that commuters are not cheated as there would be transparency in fares for the customers.
  • It will also ensure the increase in earnings of taxi drivers by “two to three” times.

11. Thermal battery plant unveiled in Andhra Pradesh

  • Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Shri Chandrababu Naidu unveiled the world’s first-ever thermal battery plant.
  • The thermal battery facility is owned by Bharat Energy Storage Technology Private Limited.
  • Thermal batteries use thermal energy to operate, i.e., the energy created by temperature differences.
  • This device is helpful in storing energy and is expected to be of great help to people in hilly and remote areas.
  • Initially, the facility is expected to operate at a capacity of 1,000 megawatts which will later be increased to 10 gigawatts by 2025.

12. Italian Bike-Maker Benelli signs MoU for Plant In telangana

  • Benelli, one of the leading bike makers in Italy, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with telangana for setting up a plant in the state.
  • The company is planning to initially assemble the CKD (Completely Knocked Down) kits of the bike for Benelli to assemble and then manufacture bikes and import exclusive range of the bikes from Italy and SouthEast Asian regions.
