Govt. slashes minimum yearly deposit for Sukanya Samriddhi account to Rs.250

  • The government has slashed the minimum annual deposit requirement for accounts under the Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana to Rs.250 from Rs.1000 earlier.
  • The government has amended the Sukanya Samriddhi Account Rules, 2016, to state that the minimum initial deposit to open the account would be Rs.250.
  • Till November 2017, more than 1.26 crore accounts have been opened across the country in the name of girl children.

  • The Union Government has set up a high-level committee headed by Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba to check mob lynching.
  • The Secretary, Department of Justice, Secretary, Department of Legal Affairs, Secretary, Legislative Department and Secretary, Social Justice and Empowerment will be the members of the committee.
  • The committee will be required to submit its recommendations to the Government within four weeks.
  • Government has further decided to constitute a Group of Ministers headed by the Union Home Minister to consider the recommendations of the high level committee.

3. NITI Aayog signs SoI with Lupin Foundation for Collaborating in Aspirational Districts

  • Shri Yaduvendra Mathur, Additional Secretary, NITI Aayog and Shri Sita Ram Gupta, Executive Director, Lupin Foundation signed a Statement of Intent (SoI) to collaborate and improve indicators in education, health & nutrition, financial inclusion and skill development, agriculture and water resources and basic infrastructure in Aspirational Districts(in the backward disticts) of Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Rajasthan of India.

  • The sanitary napkins (12% tax at present) and fortified milk (which was taxed at 18%) have been exempted from the levy.
  • Certain items from 28% tax slab are shifted to the lower 18% slab including washing machines, refrigerators, up to 25-inch televisions, vacuum cleaners, perfumes, food grinders, mixers, water cooler, Lithium ion batteries, and paints. Common-use foot wares Rs.1000 to be taxed at 5%.
  • Ethanol oil for oil companies to be taxed at 5% in place of 18% earlier.
  • GST (Goods and Services Tax) on handbags and handmade lamps has been reduced to 12%. The new GST rates would come into effect from July 27.
  • This rate reductions is estimated to cost the government exchequer nearly Rs.7000 crore.

  • At an event in Guna this afternoon he laid the foundation stone for 5 NH projects of total length 226 km, worth Rs 3583 Crore. These include
  • 4 laning of  Jhansi-Khajuraho section of NH 75 at a cost of Rs 976.62 Crore – This will give a boost to Jhansi-Khajuraho-Orcha tourist circuit by reducing travel time by 1.5 hours
  • 4 laning of Seoni-Nagpur section of NH7 at a cost of Rs 730.8 Crore – Will save 45 minutes travel time.

  • Telstar 19 is the world’s heaviest commercial communications satellite weighing over 7000 kg. It is manufactured by Space Systems Loral (SSL).
  • The motto behind the launch of this satellite is to provide high-throughput broadcast and internet services from Brazil to the northernmost regions of Canada.
