  1. BSNL launches VOIP based WINGS service
  • Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) launched a VOIP based service and named it WINGS. It offers unlimited free audio/video calling for one year.
  • The app can be used anywhere within the country and the app automatically uses the existing address book in the phone.
  • As this app is a VOIP service, there is no SIM or cable wiring in this app.

2. Anandiben Patel takes additional charge as Chattisgarh Governor

  • After the death of the governor of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel was given the additional charge of Chhattisgarh.
  • She will continue until a new governor is appointed to the state.

3. “Digital Screens” launched by Ministry of Railways to spread awareness about Indian Railways Heritage

  • Ministry of Railways launches “Digital Screens” to spread awareness about Indian Railways Heritage.
  • From the Independence Day on (August 15, 2018), “digital screens” has been made operational at 22 railway stations.
  • Additionally, QR code based posters on Railway Heritage are also being displayed at these stations.
  • These would allow passengers to scan and view a streaming video on their mobile on Railway heritages.

4. Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan launches Dial 100 Police Mobile App

  • In order to help people in the time of emergency, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has launched Dial 100 Mobile app for immediate Police service.
  • Once the Police receive a call through Dial 100 mobile app, they will reach the location as quickly as possible.

5. Postal Highway Project: India grants Rs 470 million to Nepal

  • The government of India has released additional 470 million Nepalese Rupees for the construction of Postal Highway in Nepal.
  • This money is for the ongoing construction of 14 road packages under Postal Highway Project.

6. PhonePe partners with IRCTC app Rail connect to facilitate convenient payments

  • PhonePe announced partnership with IRCTC app ‘IRCTC Rail Connect’, to facilitate convenient, fast and secure payments.
  • This will enable PhonePe’s 100 million plus users to now pay directly from their bank accounts using UPI, credit and debit cards and also the PhonePe wallet.
  • IRCTC app will have a trusted digital payment platform for the transactions.

7. Bharti AXA & Airtel Payments Bank partnered to offer Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana

  • In order to offer Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana to 190 million under-insured Indians, Bharti AXA has joined hands with Airtel Payments Bank.
  • This agreement also aims to increase penetration of life insurance products among the underinsured masses and boost financial inclusion.

9. Atal Bihari Vajpayee, former Prime Minister, passes away at 93

  • Former 3-time Indian Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, passed away following a long term illness, at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi.
  • Atal Bihari Vajpayee was 93 years old. He was born on December 25, 1924 in Gwalior, Madhya Pradesh.
  • He entered politics during the Quit India movement in 1942. He was one of the founding members of Jan Sangh, the parent organization of BJP, in 1951.

10. Ajit Wadekar, who taught India to win overseas, passes away

  • Former Indian cricket captain Ajit Wadekar, died following a long term illness, at the Jaslok Hospital in South Mumbai.
  • Ajit Wadekar was 77 years old. He was born in Mumbai. He made his international cricket debut in 1966.
  • He was India’s first ODI (One Day International) captain. He had scored 2,113 runs in his Test career.
  • He retired from the international cricket in 1974. After retirement, he served as India’s coach/manager in 1990s when Mohammad Azharuddin was the captain.

11. Renowned Malayalam poet Chemmanam Chacko dies

  • Noted Malayalam poet and Sahitya Akademi awardee Chemmanam Chacko died.
  • He had won several honours, including those by the Kerala Sahitya Akademi, Sanjayan Award, and P. Smaraka Puraskaram.
  • He had taught Malayalam at schools and colleges and was also known for his satirical works.

12. Nihal Sarin becomes India’s 53rd Grandmaster

  • Nihal Sarin became India’s 53rd Grandmaster after attaining his third and final Grand Master-norm in the Abu Dhabi Masters.
  • He is only the third grandmaster from Kerala after GN Gopal and SL Narayanan.
  • He is the twelfth youngest grandmaster in chess history.
  • Earlier in June 2018, Chennai-born R Praggnanandhaa secured the title of the grandmaster and became India’s 52nd grandmaster.
