  • Indian sprinter Hima Das created history by becoming the first Indian woman to win a gold at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships.
  • She clinched to top spot in the women’s 400m final race on the third day of competitions clocking 51.46s to win the gold.
  • She is the first Indian track athlete to have won a medal in the history of this competition.

  • Vice President of India and the President of ICWA, M. Venkaiah Naidu has appointed Dr. T.C.A. Raghavan as the Director General, ex officio Member-Secretary of the Council, ICWA (Indian Council of World Affairs).
  • Dr. T.C.A. Raghavan is an Indian Foreign Service Officer (IFS) of 1982 batch.
  • He has served as India’s High Commissioner to Islamabad and Singapore and has served in India’s missions at London, Thimphu and Kuwait.

  • Indian Railways has launched its first consolidated Bridge Management System (IR-BMS), a web-enabled IT application to store data on its 1.5 lakh bridges.
  • It was launched by Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal days after bridge in Mumbai collapsed on a railway track.
  • The IR-BMS aims for meaningful assimilation, analysis and dissemination of information related to various activities about its bridges.
  • It is a web-based platform that will show bridge master data, works data, information regarding inspection and monitoring and maintenance of bridges and other essentials.

  • A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Indian Army and SBI on the Defence Salary Package.
  • The signing-in ceremony was chaired by the Adjutant General Lt Gen Ashwani Kumar and was attended by top officials of SBI headed by Shri PK Gupta, Managing Director (Retail and Development Banking), SBI.
  • The first MoU between SBI and the Indian Army was signed in 2011 and was renewed on 23 Feb 2015.

  • In accordance with the data released by the Central Statistics Office (CSO), factory output measured in terms of the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) has slipped to seven-month low of 3.2% in May 2018.
  • The main reason being static performance of manufacturing and power sectors coupled with poor offtake of fast moving consumer goods (FMCG).

  • The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), an organisation under the Ministry of Culture, issued an order allowing photography within the premises of all centrally protected monuments/sites except at Ajanta Caves, Leh Palace and Taj Mahal.
  • This order has been issued after Prime Minister Narendra Modi questioned the logic behind the existing restrictions at an event in Dharohar Bhawan, New Delhi.
  • In 2016, the ASI made it mandatory for photographers to be licensed to function commercially in protected monuments.
