  1. World Biofuel Day
  • The World Biofuel Day is being observed by the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas every year on 10th August.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi was the Chief Guest for the inaugural session of this year’s World Biofuel Day programme.
  • On the occasion, Prime Minister launched web portal PARIVESH, a single window for environmental, wildlife, forest and Coastal Regulation Zone clearances.

2. Vice President releases the Book ‘Bebak Baat’ authored by Shri Vijay Goyal

  • The Vice President of India, Shri M. Venkaiah Naidu has said that continuous communication between public representatives and the public is crucial for development of our nation.
  • He addressed the gathering after releasing the Book ‘Bebak Baat’, authored by the Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and Statistics & Programme Implementation, Shri Vijay Goel.

3. Dr. Mahesh Sharma releases 3 books at IGNCA, New Delhi

4. ‘One District one Product’ Summit inaugurated by President of India in Uttar Pradesh

  • President of India, Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the One District one Product Summit in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
  • It is a first of its kind summit in the country to boost trade of the MSMEs.
  • This initiative will enhance skills of local people, result in economic progress of artisans of Uttar Pradesh.

5. “PARIVESH” – an environmental single window hub for Environment, Forest, Wildlife and CRZ clearances launched

  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi, launched PARIVESH (Pro-Active and Responsive facilitation by Interactive, Virtuous and Environmental Single-window Hub) on the occasion of World Biofuel Day.
  • PARIVESH is a Single-Window Integrated Environmental Management System, developed in line with ‘Digital India’ initiative.
  • It also follows the Minimum Government and Maximum Governance ideology.

6. TRAI Chairman gets two year extension

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has re-appointed Ram Sewak Sharma Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
  • This is for the first time that any TRAI chief has got an extension beyond the three-year tenure.
  • Sharma, who was set to retire on 9th August, will now remain as chairman till September 30, 2020.

7. UAE top source of inward remittances: RBI

  • According to the Reserve Bank of India’s survey of inward remittances for 2016-17, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has emerged as the top source of inward remittances, while Kerala has received the maximum funds sent from abroad.
  • UAE’s share in total remittances was 26.9%.
  • More than half of remittances received by Indian residents were used for family maintenance, i.e., consumption.

8. Rekha Sharma appointed chairperson of NCW

  • National Commission for Women member Rekha Sharma, has been appointed the chairperson of the National Commission for Women.
  • She was earlier a member of the Commission and was holding the additional charge of chairperson after Lalitha Kumaramangalam resigned office in September last year.
  • She recently stoked a controversy by suggesting abolition of confessions in churches.

9. Neeraj Chopra to be India’s flag-bearer

  • Javelin thrower star Neeraj Chopra will be India’s flag bearer in the opening ceremony of the Asian Games 2018.
  • Chopra, who won the gold medal in Commonwealth Games 2018 event in Gold Coast, will lead India’s contingent in the multi-sport event.
  • The 2018 Asian Games will take place from August 18 to September 2 and will be held in Indonesian cities of Jakarta and Palembang.
